‘Janashatru’ is written and directed by renowned Kannada playwright, director, and former Artistic Director of Ranga Shankara, S Surendranath. Based on Henrik Ibsen’s ‘An Enemy of the People,’ the play results from Surendranath being awarded the coveted Ibsen Scholarship in 2019, an international fund for theatre performances celebrating the works of the great Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. He was awarded the scholarship for his project “Culturing Voices through Act IV of An Enemy of the People.” The play features prominent theatre artists B V Shrunga, Keerthi Bhanu, Ganesh Shenoy, and Raag Urs.
‘Janashatru’ talks about a democratic government where the majority always denies individuals’ liberty, refusing to acknowledge their right to live and thereby destroying their self-determination. What happens to such individuals in a majoritarian atmosphere? Freedom of expression is erased, and voices are silenced. It is at this point that a voice must be raised, however little the voice. ‘Janashatru’ talks of the plight and determination of one individual. It also attempts to underscore the importance of being an individual in times of majoritarian democracy.
