The moment she picked up the microphone and broke into ‘Pal do pal ka saath humara’, Anu Malik, Farah Khan and Sonu Nigam knew Maalavika Sundar was their last girl standing in the top four finalists of the country’s most prestigious singing reality show – Indian Idol.
For years before and after that, Maalavika’s voice has touched the hearts of thousands across age-groups – starting with her parents who witnessed her deliver a pitch-perfect rendition of MS Subbulakshmi’s ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ as a two-year-old, to her countless fans who are left spellbound every time her classically trained voice belts out folk numbers like ‘Dang Dang’ (Manam Kothi Paravai) and …. with effortless ease.
After ten years of soaking in every complex theory and voice work in Carnatic music, Maalavika embraced her entry into show business through ‘Super Singer’ and ‘Indian Idol’ with unseen grace and grounding. Her reverence to her early musical training has time and again caught the attention of legends like AR Rahman and …., who have always taken the opportunity to appreciate it.

Maalavika stands apart as one of the rare musicians today to have been trained as per the ancient system of Gurukula Vasam under the tutelage of legendary guru, Smt Padmavathy Ananthagopalan. She’s also among the very few artists who continues to nurture her curiosity by never missing a single ‘paatu class’ under her current guru, Dr Sriram Parashuram.
Today, Maalavika’s incredible versatility and style have made her the most sought-after musician in the country’s pool of young talent. She is the unforgettable voice behind hits like (most popular film songs with their movie names in brackets).
And now, she’s on a mission to show the world the beauty of Carnatic music through her eyes. “I want to let people know how versatile this art form is,” she said to The Balcony Stories. “It has the power to mesmerize every kind of listener – whether they’re into rock, hip-hop or electronic; I want to demonstrate that Carnatic music finds a home everywhere,” she added.

Her loved ones and fans will see these possibilities unravel in a new series called ‘AND Maalavika…’, a unique, conceptualized space where she – just like her beloved Carnatic ragams – revels in her element, while collaborating with musicians across genres, styles and age-groups. An example of her distinct style is ‘Vaa Sakhi’, a single dedicated to womenkind, released for Majja and available on Spotify.
