Bengaluru: Namma Jaatre is being organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture (DKC) of the Govt of Karnataka, in partnership with Kadambari, whose President, Chandra Jain, is curating the event. Namma Jaatre is part of Unboxing Bengaluru Hubba.
The event will be flagged off on Saturday 9th December at the Vidhana Soudha at 10 AM. From there, a traditional Procession (Bhavya Meravanige) comprising groups of folk dancers, along with Musicians, Ratha, Elephant, flower Pallakki, and Bullock Carts, will proceed towards Ravindra Kalakshetra. The Honourable Minister, Kannada and Culture Department, Shivaraj S. Tangadagi will inaugurate Namma Jaatre at 11 AM at Ravindra Kalakshetra.
Namma Jaatre will be conducted over 2 days on December 9 and 10 at Ravindra Kalakshetra, from 11 AM to 8 PM. Entry to the event is Free. The event recreates the atmosphere of a folk festival. There will be a number of Craft stalls selling a variety of traditional items like Natural and Banana fibre products, Siddhi quilts, Bidri articles, Leather Puppets, Channapatna toys and articles, Kinhal toys, Belur stone items, Dharwar Kasuthi, Guledgudda Khana material, Bamboo mats, Arecanut plates, etc., and also handmade jewellery. There will also be a Market square with “Grandhige Angadi” selling Kumkum, karpoora, Bangles and the like.
Free Bullock Cart rides is also a highlight of Namma Jaatre.
Over the two days, groups of folk dancers and musicians will perform traditional art forms like Somanna Kunitha, Huli Vesha, Pooja Kunitha, Jagalige, Yakshagana, etc. There will also be various Puppet Shows, including Leather, Yakshagana and Rod Puppets, all showcasing puppetry traditions of Karnataka.
Of course, there will be a number of food stalls which will offer a variety of Karnataka cuisine specialities, such as Mudde, idlis made in jackfruit leaves, jolada-roti, Goli Bajji, Dose, coffee, etc.
